Required minimum distributions (RMDs) are the minimum amounts you must withdraw from your retirement accounts each year. You generally must start taking withdrawals from your traditional IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and retirement plan accounts when you reach age 73.
The age for withdrawing from retirement accounts was increased in 2020 to 72 from 70.5. The SECURE 2.0 Act, though, raised the age for RMDs to 73 for those who turn 72 in 2023. Therefore, your first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after you turn 73.
For simplicity's sake, let's assume a hypothetical investor has one IRA with an account balance of $100,000 as of December 31 of the prior year. To calculate the RMD the year they turn 73, they would use a life expectancy factor of 26.5. So the RMD would be $100,000 ÷ 26.5, or $3,773.58.
Any taxable distribution paid to you is subject to mandatory withholding of 20%, even if you intend to roll the distribution over later. If the distribution is rolled over, and you want to defer tax on the entire taxable portion, you will have to add funds from other sources equal to the amount withheld.
Deferring Social Security payments, rolling over old 401(k)s, setting up IRAs to avoid the mandatory 20% federal income tax, and keeping your capital gains taxes low are among the best strategies for reducing taxes on your 401(k) withdrawal.
A force-out provision is a clause that requires dismissed participants with low balances of a set limit to remove their funds from the 401(k) plan. The minimum amount required can be from $1,000 to $5,000¹ (not including rolled over amounts), depending on the option chosen by the employer.
Mistake #1: Not Starting Your RMD on Time
The rules for RMD starting ages have undergone changes in recent years, leading to confusion among many individuals. In the past, the starting age for RMDs was 70½. However, as of 2023, the starting age stands at 73 and is set to increase to 75 in the future.
As a general rule, if you withdraw funds before age 59 ½, you'll trigger an IRS tax penalty of 10%. The good news is that there's a way to take your distributions a few years early without incurring this penalty. This is known as the rule of 55.
The $1,000 per month rule is designed to help you estimate the amount of savings required to generate a steady monthly income during retirement. According to this rule, for every $240,000 you save, you can withdraw $1,000 per month if you stick to a 5% annual withdrawal rate.
Since Jan. 1, 2024, however, a new IRS rule allows retirement plan owners to withdraw up to $1,000 for unspecified personal or family emergency expenses, penalty-free, if their plan allows.
The 4% rule is a popular retirement withdrawal strategy that suggests retirees can safely withdraw the amount equal to 4% of their savings during the year they retire and then adjust for inflation each subsequent year for 30 years.
Clients who are still working after age 70 ½ may generally continue contributing to employer-sponsored 401(k) accounts and SEP IRAs. In fact, employers must continue to make employer contributions to the SEP IRA of an employee who is over age 70 ½ if it makes similar contributions to younger employees' accounts.

The short answer is no, taking a distribution from your 401(k) does not impact your eligibility for (or the amount of) your Social Security benefits.
According to the Uniform Lifetime Table, a 75-year-old should use a distribution period of 24.6 years when calculating an RMD. So you'd simply divide the year-end balance by this factor. Dividing $500,000 by 24.6 years gives you an RMD of $20,325.
One of the easiest ways to lower the amount of taxes you have to pay on 401(k) withdrawals is to convert to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k). Withdrawals from Roth accounts are not taxed.
Ultimately, this comes down to the choice that's best for your finances. Your money has the most potential for growth if you take your entire minimum distribution at the end of each calendar year.
By age 50, you should have six times your salary in an account. By age 60, you should have eight times your salary working for you. By age 67, your total savings total goal is 10 times the amount of your current annual salary. So, for example, if you're earning $75,000 per year, you should have $750,000 saved.
Generally, a designated beneficiary is required to liquidate the account by the end of the 10th year following the year of death of the IRA owner (this is known as the 10-year rule). An RMD may be required in years 1-9 when the decedent had already begun taking RMDs.
If the decedent died on/after the RBD, annual RMDs must continue over the deceased IRA owner's remaining single life expectancy (the ghost life rule). This can produce a post-death payout period exceeding 10 years.
If you are taking RMDs and collecting Social Security benefits, the RMDs will not impact the amount of your benefits—but it could impact how much of your Social Security benefit is taxable. The amount your Social Security is taxed depends on your annual income. RMDs may increase your taxable income.
Borrowing from your 401(k) may be the best option, although it does carry some risk. Alternatively, consider the Rule of 55 as another way to withdraw money from your 401(k) without the tax penalty.
With only a few exceptions, your 401(k) distributions are subject to a mandatory 20% withholding. Money withheld from your distributions applies toward your tax bill, similar to paycheck withholding when you're working a job.
Beneficiaries can avoid taxes on a Roth 401(k) inheritance as long as the account holder began making contributions to the account at least five years before the beneficiary started taking withdrawals. For the 2024 tax year and beyond, RMDs aren't required from designated Roth accounts .
