No, a contactless payment will generally not go through twice for the same transaction, even if you tap your card or device multiple times. Each tap produces a unique, one-time security code, meaning the terminal recognizes multiple taps as a single transaction attempt.
The best place to start if you have been charged twice by the same company on your credit card is by contacting the company who you paid. But we realise it's not always possible to resolve a dispute directly with the retailer or supplier. If you can't resolve the issue we may be able to help you and start a claim.
Always use the same contactless card or device, or Oyster card to touch in and out. For example, if you touch in with your iPhone and touch out with your Apple Watch or contactless card, you'll be charged for two incomplete journeys.
There is no fixed limit to the number of contactless payments you can make. However, additional security checks may occasionally be required. When this happens, you'll be asked to enter your PIN to confirm your identity. Simply use Chip and PIN as normal.
If there are multiple completed charges for the same transaction
What does the retry process look like? Transactions returned for Insufficient or Uncollected Funds will attempt to retry up to two times over the course of 180 days in an automatic process.
When contactless card payments were introduced in 2007, the transaction limit was set at £10. The limit was raised gradually, to £15 in 2010, to £20 in 2012, then to £30 in 2015, before the Covid pandemic prompted a jump to £45 in 2020, then to £100 in October 2021.
To stop contactless payments on your debit card all you need to do is:
Your data is encrypted and your details are kept safe during every transaction. The retailer must enter an amount into the payment terminal first, and then you need to hold your card very close to it. This means you can't accidentally spend money from walking by or being near the payment terminal.
If a customer taps off twice at the same Opal card pole reader within 10 seconds when exiting a station, only the first tap is successful. The second tap displays the message "already tapped off" and no further deduction is made to the card balance.
Also, as a security measure, you can only make a maximum of 5 Contactless transactions in a row. After that, you'll have to enter your PIN to carry out another transaction (even if it's for under €50).
If you're due a refund when we automatically complete a journey, it'll load on to your Oyster card when you next touch in on a yellow card reader. If you used contactless, we'll refund your bank account automatically.
Certain merchants, such as internet companies, may authorise a charge when you place an order. The merchant may then authorise your Card again when the amount is due. In these instances, the charge may appear twice in Pending Transactions but will be billed to your Account only once.
The 2/3/4 rule is a guideline, primarily used by Bank of America, that limits how many new credit cards you can get: no more than 2 in 30 days, 3 in 12 months, and 4 in 24 months, helping to prevent over-application and manage hard inquiries on your credit report. While not universal, it's a useful benchmark for responsible card application, though other banks have different rules (like Chase's 5/24 rule).
You can use a contactless card as many times as you like within a day so long as each purchase is under £100. Just bear in mind that you may be asked to use chip and PIN after using contactless a few times in a row.
Freeze contactless
This instantly blocks contactless payments with your debit or credit card. But note the following difference: Freezing your debit card also stops contactless payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Freezing your credit card doesn't stop contactless payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
A good place to start is to visit your card provider's website and look for details on 'disputed transactions' or 'chargeback claims'. If you can't find it, get in touch with your card provider and tell them you want to use the 'chargeback scheme'.
Because contactless payments require neither PIN nor signature authorisation, lost or stolen contactless cards can be used to make fraudulent transactions.
In the U.S., there is no fixed national limit for contactless payments, allowing most transactions of any amount to be made using contactless methods. However, for larger transactions, typically above $100, merchants or card issuers may require verification through a signature or PIN, depending on their policies.
you can turn off and on contactless for debit cards and digital wallet payments using our app by selecting Manage Cards, then selecting Contactless.
If you notice your card was accidentally swiped twice, for example, show the retailer or service provider the receipt, as well as your credit card statement. For online purchases, call or email the vendor and send copies of the relevant documents. In many cases, the merchant can cancel or reverse the charge.
The 2-2-2 credit rule is a guideline for building strong credit, suggesting you should have two active credit accounts (like cards or loans) for at least two years, with consistent on-time payments for those two years, often with a minimum credit limit of $2,000 per account, to demonstrate financial responsibility to lenders, especially for mortgages. It's a benchmark to show you can handle credit well over time, reducing lender risk and improving approval odds for major loans.
