You generally cannot change bank information with the IRS after filing an accepted return; if your information is wrong, the refund bounces back, and the IRS mails a check, causing delays. If your return is rejected, you can edit details before resubmitting. For existing payment plans or direct debits, use the IRS Online Account to update bank details.
If the IRS has accepted your return already, you won't be able to change your bank and routing number for your tax refund. You can only request that the IRS issue you a check – and that's only if the return has not yet been processed.
You can use the Online Payment Agreement tool to make the following changes:
Go back into the e-file section of your return and update the banking information before e-filing again. You must click Edit in the Sign & File Your Return section of the E-file process to make those changes. Note: If your return is accepted, the banking information you provided on the return cannot be changed.
Fact checked by Ashleigh S. If your tax refund was sent to a closed account, your bank will reject the deposit and return the money to the IRS, who typically mails a paper check to your address within 2 to 7 weeks.
You can direct your refund to any of your checking or savings accounts; you cannot direct your refund to someone else's account (except for your spouse's account, if this is a joint refund).
If a refund goes to a closed bank account, the bank usually rejects the transaction and returns the funds to the sender (like the IRS or a merchant), who then issues the refund via a paper check or another method, causing a delay of a few weeks to a couple of months. For tax refunds, the IRS will typically mail a check to the address on file, while other refunds might go back to the original payment method or require you to contact the sender for alternative arrangements.
However, if the return was rejected, you can correct the banking information before resubmitting the return. Go back into the E-file section of your return and update the banking information before filing again.

You can't change your refund option after filing your return, but you can always update your choice next time you file. Refunds from amended returns are issued at least 12 weeks from the date you filed the amended return.

You incorrectly enter an account or routing number, and the number passes the validation check, but your designated financial institution rejects and returns the deposit to the IRS. The IRS will issue you a refund by other means for the amount of that deposit once it is received.
Banks offer two ways to change your bank account details – online and offline. With the rise in digitisation, most individuals opt for the online method, which again can be done via two ways – internet banking and mobile banking.

How do I change my bank info for direct deposit?
Contact your financial institution to ensure they will accept your direct deposit and verify your account and routing number. Verify your account and routing numbers with your financial institution and double check the accuracy of the numbers you enter on your return prior to signing and submitting it.
The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS. Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return. Expect a delay of at least several weeks to receive your refund.
If you provide the information the IRS requested, the IRS should correct your account and resolve the refund issue (generally within 60 days). If you file a missing or late return, the IRS will process your returns and issue your refunds (generally within 90 days).
