Cashing a Check at an ATM
It's a little less straightforward than taking it to a bank, but you can cash a check at an ATM, too. Not every ATM will enable this option, though; some will only allow you to deposit the check and some don't offer check deposits at all.
For whatever reason you're still using paper checks, you'll be happy to know that Cash App is rolling out the mobile check deposit system that lets you deposit checks into your Cash App account by taking a photo of the check with your phone.
Just before cashing or depositing the check, sign the back with your name on the line with the X. Hand over the check with ID or a bank card. If you don't belong to a bank, you'll likely need to show a retail clerk or bank teller your identification, such as a state-issued driver's license or other government ID.
ATMs. Certain ATMs allow you to cash checks, regardless of whether or not you have an account. However, there may be restrictions on the types of checks you can cash. And, you might need a bank card whether or not you have an actual account with said bank.
If the check is approved, customers can have the money transferred to a PayPal Cash Plus account in minutes, with the fees associated with instant disbursement waived for all government-issued stimulus checks processed within the PayPal app.
Standard deposits are free and arrive within 1-3 business days. Instant Deposits are subject to a 0.5% -1.75% fee (with a minimum fee of $0.25) and arrive instantly to your debit card.
If you're eligible for Mobile Check Deposit, you can deposit your check using the Chime mobile app by following these steps: On the home screen, tap Move Money. Tap Mobile check deposit. Choose the type of check you want to deposit and follow the steps.
Cashing a check for someone else at the bank
Banks will allow you to cash or deposit a personal check for someone else. This is especially useful for people without a bank account, as it means a friend or family member can cash in a personal check for you.
With Chime, your mobile check deposits can be instantly placed in your account. The maximum time for a mobile check deposit to go through is 5 business days (excluding federal holidays).
It does not take long for Chime to deposit checks into your account most of the time. Also, it does not happen instantly within a flash of seconds. However, it would be nice if that did happen. You can expect Chime to deposit most checks into your account between 3-5 business days.
It usually takes a few seconds to review a check for approval, although it can take 10-15 minutes and in rare circumstances, up to 1.5 hours while we work to verify enough information to approve your check. If your check is approved, your money can be credited to your Venmo account usually within minutes.
Deposit to a Prepaid Debit Card
Prepaid debit cards typically allow you to load funds via mobile check deposit. Prepaid debit cards are relatively easy to get approved for, even if you can't open a checking account. That said, many prepaid cards have up to a 10-day waiting period before you can access your check funds.
Money in Minutes. If you select Money in Minutes, Ingo Money will review your check for funding approval using a process that usually takes a few minutes but may take up to one hour.
Using this option, your funds will be available in your account once your mobile check deposit is approved (which typically takes 10-15 minutes). Alternatively, you can choose the “In 10 Days” option when depositing a check which is free.
A check deposited into a PayPal account can only be made out to the person who owns the account. Third-party checks are not accepted. PayPal accepts personal and business checks from all banks as long as they are not made out to “cash.” PayPal does not accept traveler's checks, cashier's checks or money orders.
Cashing Checks Online
You can also cash a check online or mobile, either through your own bank (most banks allow you to deposit checks online, although the check proceeds won't be available until the next business day.
While Chime does not accept deposits of any kind at ATMs, you can deposit cash into your Chime Checking Account fee-free at more than 8,500 Walgreens and Duane Reade locations. Here's how it works: Ask the cashier to make a deposit to your Chime account at the register (they might refer to this as a "cash reload").
Walmart only offers in-store check cashing services via its Money Centers. Simply take your endorsed check and a photo ID to the Money Center service desk or any cashier.
It all depends on your bank's policies. Some banks may not allow you to deposit or cash a check made payable to someone else (a third-party check) while others may have special requirements you'll need to meet.
This would be done by having the payee endorse the check (sign the back) and below that write "PAY TO THE ORDER OF JOHN SMITH", and then John Smith can endorse and then cash or deposit the check.
