43 percent of people worldwide now live into their seventies, up from 33 percent twenty years ago. But just because we're living longer doesn't mean we're living better.
A supercentenarian, sometimes hyphenated as super-centenarian, is a person who has reached the age of 110 years. This age milestone is only achieved by about one in a thousand centenarians. Even rarer is a person who has lived to 115. There are 75 people in recorded history who have indisputably reached 115.
Yates estimates that a 70-year-old man has a 54% chance of reaching the age of 90 if he does not smoke or have diabetes, has healthy weight and blood pressure, and exercises. But cutting out exercise and becoming more sedentary reduces the chances of reaching 90 to 44%.
In previous studies, death before age 75 has been considered premature. Overall, 65% of male and 78% of female cohort members were expected to live to at least age 75 (Table 2). The probability of survival to age 75 varied by income adequacy quintile.
The overwhelming majority of 60-year-olds will live until at least 70, and majorities will get to at least 80. Similarly, very few people who make it to 50 die before they turn 60. As we look at younger and younger cohorts, we see better and better long-term odds as well.

The study, published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, showed that life expectancy for obese men and women was 4.2 and 3.5 years shorter respectively than people in the entire healthy BMI weight range. The difference for underweight men and women was 4.3 (men) and 4.5 (women) years.
