To read your ChexSystems report, check for negative entries like unpaid fees, overdrafts, or involuntary account closures from the past five years. Request a free annual report at ChexSystems.com, then review identifying information, account history, and check activity for accuracy. A high score (100–899) indicates lower risk.
The information that ChexSystems compiles is based only on closed accounts, not current ones, and can reveal whether past accounts were closed voluntarily or due to negative behavior, such as repeated overdrafts or suspected fraud. Negative marks typically stay on a ChexSystems report for up to five years.

Our current practice is to retain record of reported information for a period of five years from the report date unless the source of the information requests its removal or ChexSystems becomes obligated to remove it under applicable law or policy.
Collects and reports data on checking account applications, openings, and closures, including reasons for account closure. Provides deposit account information to lenders evaluating whether to offer credit to consumers with damaged, little or no credit history.
If you want to have your information excluded permanently, you may print, complete, sign and return a ChexSystems Permanent Opt Out Election form. Please complete the entire form. Failure to provide complete and accurate information may prevent the processing of your request.
There's no defined “”good”” ChexSystems score, but a score of 581 or higher generally indicates approval for a new checking account. Improve your ChexSystems score by addressing negative marks on your report, practicing responsible banking habits, and potentially opening a second chance account.
The majority of banks – including OneUnited Bank – use ChexSystems. Many banks will not open a new deposit account for a customer who has a negative item reported. (OneUnited Bank is more forgiving and has a second chance checking account – which we will discuss later.)
To do this, you can visit the official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria and enter your BVNs to check your status. If your BVN is blacklisted, it indicates that your account has been flagged for irregularities or fraudulent activities, thereby leading to restrictions on financial transactions and withdrawals.
Opening an account with a ChexSystems report
Some financial institutions may deny everyone who has a ChexSystems report, while others may only deny people with certain types of activity. ChexSystems itself does not approve or deny applications; it merely provides reports to financial institutions.
How to clear your ChexSystems report
With a low ChexSystems score, you may not qualify for a traditional checking account. If you've had an adverse account history and won't qualify for a traditional checking account, certain banks and credit unions offer second chance checking accounts.
The 15/3 credit card payment method is a strategy to potentially boost your credit score by making two payments per billing cycle: one about 15 days before your statement closes (to lower reported utilization) and another around 3 days before the payment due date (to cover the rest and avoid late fees), though its actual impact on credit scoring is debated. It works by keeping your reported balance lower when the card issuer reports to bureaus, but experts note the specific timing isn't magical, and focusing on the reporting date is key.
Yes, you can likely get a $50,000 loan with a 700 credit score, as this falls into the "good" credit range (670-739) that unlocks better rates, but approval also hinges on your income, debt-to-income (DTI) ratio (ideally below 36%), and overall credit history, with lenders looking for stability and repayment ability, so prequalifying with multiple lenders helps compare terms.
Using 90% of your credit limit creates a very high credit utilization ratio, which significantly hurts your credit score by signaling high risk to lenders, though you won't "overdraw" it like a bank account; it can also lead to higher interest rates (Penalty APRs), so it's best to keep utilization below 30%, ideally even lower, by paying down balances.
Generally, negative information remains on ChexSystems and/or Early Warning Services (EWS) consumer reports for five years. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, certain negative information may be reported for up to seven years.
