The most convenient way to check on a tax refund is by using the Where's My Refund? tool on IRS.gov. Taxpayers can start checking their refund status within 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of the taxpayer's e-filed return.
Tax audit letters will include your name, tax ID number or Social Security number, employee ID number, address and contact information. Typically, an IRS audit letter will call out that your tax return from a certain year has been flagged for examination.
If you and/or your parents have never filed taxes with the IRS, the IRS Verification of Non-Filing Letter must be requested by mail using the paper version of the IRS Form 4506-T available at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf You will need to print, complete, sign and send the form by mail or fax to the IRS.
The non-filer must sign and date the form and enter their telephone number. • Mail or fax the completed IRS Form 4506-T to the address (or FAX number) provided on page 2 of the form. Tax filers can expect to receive a paper IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter at the address provided on their request within 5-10 days.

Verify contact information
All IRS phone numbers and website addresses should match those on the IRS.gov website, and a specific notice number or reference code may be at the top or bottom of the letter. Don't hesitate to reach out to the IRS directly if you're unsure.

Does the IRS Send Audit Letters as Certified Mail? An audit notice will always come through the mail, but it doesn't necessarily come as certified mail. The IRS's website does not specify whether or not the agency sends these letters through certified mail.
The IRS sends a 5071C letter when it receives a tax return with your name and tax identification number, but believes the return to be fraudulent. A Letter 5071C will ask you to complete an online identity verification process to confirm your identity.
Check your federal tax return status online
If you are receiving a tax refund, check its status using the IRS Where's My Refund tool. You can view the status of your refund for the past 3 tax years.
Then, the taxpayer should call the IRS using the toll-free Identity Verification telephone number: (800) 830-5084. If the taxpayer did not file the return in question, they should still call the toll-free number to inform the IRS.
Read the letter carefully.
Most IRS letters and notices are about federal tax returns or tax accounts. Each notice deals with a specific issue and includes any steps the taxpayer needs to take. A notice may reference changes to a taxpayer's account, taxes owed, a payment request or a specific issue on a tax return.

Spotting the scam
HMRC does usually request information from companies by letter or via a business tax account, rather than by email. However, HMRC email addresses end @hmrc.gov.uk, while the email address used in these fraudulent letters is: companies-review@hmrc-taxchecks.org.
They also confirm that the telephone number 0300 322 7835 is a genuine HMRC telephone number. If you have received a letter from HMRC about a simple assessment tax bill – don't ignore it!
You may receive a notice or letter asking you to verify your identity and tax return information with the IRS. This helps prevent an identity thief from getting your refund.

The main difference between Form 4506 and 4506-T is that 4506 is a request for an exact copy of your tax return and submitted documentation, not the shortened transcript. Form 4506 also takes much longer to process (up to 75 days) and there's a $43 processing fee for each return requested.
