GST (Goods and Services Tax) generally works as an indirect tax on consumption, taxing goods and services at each stage of supply, but allowing businesses to claim credits for GST paid on inputs, ultimately taxing only the value added and reaching the final consumer, while the U.S. GST (Generation-Skipping Transfer) tax is a federal estate tax on large transfers to grandchildren or more remote descendants to prevent estate tax avoidance, levied at 40% above a high exemption.
Take apparel manufacturing as an example and 10% as the GST applicable. The manufacturer buys raw material worth INR 500 that is inclusive of the GST of INR 50 (10% of 500). He then adds his own value of INR 50 to the materials during the manufacturing process. This brings the gross value of the product to INR 550.
The goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit is a tax-free quarterly payment for individuals and families with low and modest incomes to help offset the GST or HST they pay. It may also include payments from provincial and territorial programs.

The Basic Mechanics of the GST Tax
