As of late 2025, India’s GST system was overhauled to move from a four-tier structure to a simplified framework, primarily featuring two main rates—5% and 18%—effective from September 22, 2025. A special 40% rate also applies to luxury and "sin" goods, replacing the previous 28% plus cess structure.
The GST rates are currently structured into the following slabs: 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. Each rate is designated for specific categories of goods and services, with the 12% and 28% slabs having been eliminated.
The new GST reform finally addresses that. With only three slabs (5%, 18%, and 40%), the government aims to reduce complexity, lower consumer costs in essential categories, and make the tax system more predictable.
