Birth certificates are government records. The original belongs to the government entity that created it. Copies belong to whoever bought them or to whoever they were given, just like any other piece of paper.
If your bond was issued in 1974 or after, go to Treasury Hunt. Enter the information Treasury Hunt requests. If the system finds your bonds, it will give you a special version of FS Form 1048 that enables us to process your claim without serial numbers.
Electronic EE or I savings bonds
You can redeem any amount of $25 or more by logging in to your TreasuryDirect account. To cash a paper bond, you'll need to redeem it for the full value by sending in an FS Form 1522 along with your paper bond.
The U.S. Treasury keeps a record of each U.S. savings bond's original owner, and offers a partially-complete online listing of those owners' bonds. Using the owner's social security number, you can search for unclaimed U.S. savings bonds, or file a claim for one, by going to the U.S. Treasury's Treasury Hunt webpage.

If only one person is named on the bond and that person has died, the bond belongs to that person's estate. If two people are named on the bond and both have died, the bond belongs to the estate of the one who died last.

If you'd like to take money out of Premium Bonds, but make sure that certain Bonds are kept in the draw, you can do this online using a form. You can also download, print and complete a cashing in form. Then post your completed form to us together with the Bond certificates to be cashed in (if you have them).
You can get your cash for an EE or I savings bond any time after you have owned it for 1 year. However, the longer you hold the bond, the more it earns for you (for up to 30 years for an EE or I bond). Also, if you cash in the bond in less than 5 years, you lose the last 3 months of interest.
