Yet an HSBC survey found that Americans in retirement expect to leave nearly $177,000 to their heirs. As it turns out, the passing of property and assets doesn't always go as expected or planned.
The median inheritance in 2019 was $92,700 for those whose parents had a college degree and $76,200 for those whose parents didn't have a college degree, according to the Federal Reserve. Some assets you could leave your heirs are more effective for tax and financial purposes.
The authors find that 30 to 40 percent of households eventually receive an inheritance. This figure is a little higher than our estimate of around 30 percent (see Section 4).

There is no federal inheritance tax—that is, a tax on the sum of assets an individual receives from a deceased person. However, a federal estate tax applies to estates larger than $11.7 million for 2021 and $12.06 million for 2022. The tax is assessed only on the portion of an estate that exceeds those amounts.
