When you sell a capital asset for a higher price than its original value, the money you make on that sale is called a capital gain. And when you sell an asset for less than its original value, the money you lose is known as a capital loss.
Any gain over $250,000 is taxable.
Capital gains tax rates
A capital gains rate of 0% applies if your taxable income is less than or equal to: $47,025 for single and married filing separately; $94,050 for married filing jointly and qualifying surviving spouse; and. $63,000 for head of household.
In this example, you see a capital gain of $100,000 on your home sale. If your income and asset class put you in the 20% capital gains tax bracket, you pay 20% of your profit.
