You can generally expect your credit score to update at least once a month, but it can be more frequently if you have multiple financial products. Each time any one of your creditors sends information to any of the three main credit bureaus — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — your score may refresh.
Some lenders and industries use older versions like FICO 2, 4, and 5. In fact, these are still used by the mortgage industry when assessing creditworthiness for new mortgages and deciding on interest rates.
Credit reports and other FICO Score versions will be updated based on the type of subscription you have – monthly for FICO® Basic or FICO® Premier and quarterly for FICO® Advanced. They will also be updated if you purchase additional credit reports that aren't a part of your subscription.
Known as "classic" FICO® Scores, the following versions of the FICO® Score are widely used by mortgage lenders. FICO® Score 2: Mortgage lenders get this version of the FICO® Score from Experian. FICO® Score 4: Mortgage lenders get this version of the FICO® Score from TransUnion.

The scoring model used in mortgage applications

Paying the loan down completely may briefly lower your credit score because you'll have less accounts and less variety of accounts open.
That's right; each of the three credit bureaus—Experian, Equifax and TransUnion—assigns consumer credit scores based on the unique information in their credit reports. This means someone may have a different FICO® Score among the different models and a different score from each of the credit bureaus.
To get a rapid rescore, you must ask a lender to apply for it on your behalf. You can't initiate the process yourself. A lender may recommend rapid rescoring if your current credit score is a few points below the score necessary to get a lower interest rate and other desirable loan terms.
You can access your FICO score versions from the Scores tab under Score versions by loan type. myFICO plans provide base FICO Score Versions and industry-specific FICO Score Versions used in mortgage lending, auto loans, and credit card lending.
The most commonly used FICO Score in the mortgage-lending industry is the FICO Score 5. According to FICO, the majority of lenders pull credit histories from all three credit reporting agencies as they evaluate mortgage applications. Mortgage lenders may also use FICO Score 2 or FICO Score 4 in their decisions as well.
Consequently, when lenders check your FICO credit score, whether based on credit report data from Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, they will likely use the FICO 8 scoring model. FICO 8 scores range between 300 and 850. A FICO score of at least 700 is considered a good score.
The first place you should check for your free FICO Score is with your credit card issuer. Many card issuers provide their cardholders with free access to their credit score. While there's a good chance you'll have access to your credit score, the key is whether it's your FICO Score or VantageScore.
FICO Auto Score has several versions. Most auto lenders use FICO Auto Score 8, as the most widespread, or FICO Auto Score 9. It's the most recent and used by all three bureaus. FICO Auto Score ranges from 250 to 900, meaning your FICO score will differ from your FICO Auto Score.
What Credit Score Do Lenders Use? The two main companies that produce and maintain credit scoring models are FICO® and VantageScore. Lenders most commonly use the FICO® Score to make lending decisions, and in particular, the FICO® Score 8 is the most popular version for general use.
It's recommended you have a credit score of 620 or higher when you apply for a conventional loan. If your score is below 620, lenders either won't be able to approve your loan or may be required to offer you a higher interest rate, which can result in higher monthly payments.
FHA loans (score: 580)
Most mortgage lenders accept FICO scores of 580 and above for an FHA loan. And you only need 3.5% down to buy a house with this program. Some lenders even allow credit scores of 500-579 under the FHA program, though you'll need a 10% down payment if your score is in that range.
Credit Karma touts that it will always be free to the consumers who use its website or mobile app. But how accurate is Credit Karma? In some cases, as seen in an example below, Credit Karma may be off by 20 to 25 points.
How long does it take for my credit score to update after paying off debt? It can often take as long as one to two months for debt payment information to be reflected on your credit score. This has to do with both the timing of credit card and loan billing cycles and the monthly reporting process followed by lenders.
A limited credit history could be yet another reason why your credit score isn't increasing. Data that goes into figuring out the length of your credit history includes: The average age of your accounts. The age of your oldest account.
Although ranges vary depending on the credit scoring model, generally credit scores from 580 to 669 are considered fair; 670 to 739 are considered good; 740 to 799 are considered very good; and 800 and up are considered excellent.
