Companies with under $3m in sales will typically sell for 2.5 – 3.5 X their discretionary earnings (total cash the owner could take out of the company). Smaller companies that are even more owner-reliant will even be lower than that.
In general, 20% is a good profit margin goal for a new business. Most companies can expect to earn a profit margin of around 10% based on industry and economic factors. If your business has a lower profit margin, it's time to make changes to accelerate sales performance and decrease overhead.

That seven-figure sum is up 14% from a year ago, when survey respondents thought amassing $2.2 million was enough.
For a $3 million retirement fund, anticipate a monthly income of $6,250 over 40 years, barring investment growth or loss. Factors such as lifestyle choices, inflation, and healthcare costs will influence how long your savings last.

Determining the Ideal Payroll Percentage
However, payroll as a percentage of revenue should range between 15% and 30%. Anything above 30% typically means your labor costs are starting to eat into your earnings, and you are not effectively controlling labor costs.
Average revenue measures how much revenue your company makes either per unit or per customer account. It's a non-GAAP measure that helps executives and investors refine their analysis of a company's revenue generation capability and growth rate at the unit level.
To find the fair market value, it is then necessary to divide that figure by the capitalization rate. Therefore, the income approach would reveal the following calculations. Projected sales are $500,000, and the capitalization rate is 25%, so the fair market value is $125,000.
So as an example, a company doing $2 million in real revenue (I'll explain below) should target a profit of 10 percent of that $2 million, owner's pay of 10 percent, taxes of 15 percent and operating expenses of 65 percent. Take a couple of seconds to study the chart.

While breaking $1 million in revenue is an impressive milestone for a small business, it's important to remember that revenue alone isn't a reliable indicator of business success. Profitability, cash flow, and customer satisfaction are also critical factors that need to be considered.
The Revenue Multiple Method
The revenue multiple used often falls between 0.5 to 5 times yearly revenue depending on the industry. For a company doing $2 million in gross annual sales, that could equate to a business valuation between $1 million (0.5X multiplier) up to $10 million (5X yearly sales).
How many companies in the world have over $100M in revenue? It is safe (conservative) to say there are at least 8,000 businesses in the world with at least $100 Million in revenue. Most likely, there are at least 60,000 business in the world with at least $100 M in revenue.
A high-net-worth individual (HNWI) is a person with typically at least $1 million in liquid financial assets. An ultra-high-net-worth individual has a net worth of more than $30 million.
The 95th percentile, with a net worth of $3.2 million, is considered wealthy, facilitating estate planning and possibly owning multiple homes. The top 1%, or the 99th percentile, has a net worth of $16.7 million and represents the very wealthy, who enjoy considerable financial freedom and luxury.
The top 10% of earners have an average net worth of $2.65 million. Even if you're squeaking into the upper class (the 80-90% range), you're looking at about $793,000. Moving down to the middle class, things get a bit more varied. The upper-middle class folks have an average net worth of around $300,800.
You can probably retire in financial comfort at age 45 if you have $3 million in savings. Although it's much younger than most people retire, that much money can likely generate adequate income for as long as you live.
