FICO® score ranges vary — they can range from 300 to 850 or 250 to 900, depending on the scoring model — but higher scores can indicate that you may be less risky to lenders.
First of all, a 900 credit score isn't really possible. And just 1% of the population can achieve a credit score of 850, so there's a certain point where trying to get the highest possible credit score isn't realistic at all. Only a few credit score models have a credit score limit of 900 as is.
A credit score of 900 is either not possible or not very relevant. The number you should really focus on is 800. On the standard 300-850 range used by FICO and VantageScore, a credit score of 800+ is considered “perfect.” That's because higher scores won't really save you any money.
Most credit scoring systems use a scale that ranges from 300 to 850. There are, however, some credit scoring models that go up to 900 or 950, including industry-specific scores used by certain institutions. Working your way up to an 850 credit score might sound appealing, but it isn't necessary.
The Perfect Credit Score May Vary
The generic FICO® Score has a score range of 300 to 850, so a perfect score on that scale is, of course, 850. The same is true of the most recent scoring models from FICO competitor VantageScore®: Its VantageScore 3.0 and 4.0 models also use a 300 to 850 scale.
