By age 50, you would be considered on track if you have three-and-a-half to six times your preretirement gross income saved. And by age 60, you should have six to 11 times your salary saved in order to be considered on track for retirement.
As a general rule of thumb, if you have less than $1M in your 401k, then you should go ahead and max it out. If you have more than $1M, then it becomes a complicated decision, especially if you need accessible funds to retire early.
General guidance is to have six times your annual salary saved by age 50. I consider this value to be guidance only. I would argue for most people having 1.2--2.5M saved for retirement by age 65 ought to be the target figure regardless of salary.
The 401(k) contribution limit for 2024 is $23,000 for employee salary deferrals, and $69,000 for the combined employee and employer contributions. If you're age 50 or older, you're eligible for an additional $7,500 in catch-up contributions, raising your employee deferral limit to $30,500.

Under the terms of this rule, you can withdraw funds from your current job's 401(k) or 403(b) plan with no 10% tax penalty if you leave that job in or after the year you turn 55. (Qualified public safety workers can start even earlier, at 50.) It doesn't matter whether you were laid off, fired, or just quit.
If you have $400,000 in the bank you can retire early at age 62, but it will be tight. The good news is that if you can keep working for just five more years, you are on track for a potentially quite comfortable retirement by full retirement age.
Now, most financial advisors recommend that you have between five and six times your annual income in a 401(k) account or other retirement savings account by age 50. For personal finance guru Dave Ramsey, one retirement account option stands apart from the rest. Ramsey recommended contributing to a company-administered 401(k), but not necessarily the traditional version. “We always recommend the Roth option if your plan offers one,” said Ramsey.
It may take some courage, but increasing your contributions to retirement accounts during a recession can be a great financial move. You benefit by buying a lot more when prices are down, setting your portfolio up for future success when the economy recovers.
Can You Retire at 50 With $300k? It may be possible if you have low expenses and income from other sources. Assuming a 4% withdrawal rate, the funds might generate $12,000 of annual income. That's probably not enough for most people, and you typically don't get Social Security until your 60s.

In fact, among those currently saving for retirement, 57% say the amount they're hoping to save is less than $1 million.
The $1,000 per month rule is designed to help you estimate the amount of savings required to generate a steady monthly income during retirement. According to this rule, for every $240,000 you save, you can withdraw $1,000 per month if you stick to a 5% annual withdrawal rate.

£300k in a pension isn't a huge amount to retire on at the fairly young age of 60, but it's possible for certain lifestyles depending on how your pension fund performs while you're retired and how much you need to live on.

This is where the rule of 55 comes in. If you turn 55 (or older) during the calendar year you lose or leave your job, you can begin taking distributions from your 401(k) without paying the early withdrawal penalty. However, you must still pay taxes on your withdrawals.
You must take your first required minimum distribution for the year in which you reach age 73. However, you can delay taking the first RMD until April 1 of the following year. If you reach age 73 in 2024, you must take your first RMD by April 1, 2025, and the second RMD by Dec. 31, 2025.
