GST/HST exemptions in Canada apply to specific goods and services that are not subject to tax, such as used residential housing, long-term rentals (1+ month), health/dental care, educational services, and financial services. Additionally, "zero-rated" items like basic groceries, prescription drugs, and medical devices are taxed at 0%.
Almost everyone has to pay the GST/HST on purchases of taxable supplies of property and services (other than zero‑rated supplies). However, in some situations, individuals registered under the Indian Act, Indian bands and band‑empowered entities are relieved of paying the GST/HST on taxable supplies.

GST Exemption Limit
Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime in India, businesses whose annual revenue exceeds specific thresholds are required to register and pay GST. Currently, the GST Exemption Limit is set at Rs. 40 lakhs for goods and Rs. 20 lakhs for services.
Customers do not pay GST on goods and services that are GST‑free such as basic food, many medical and health services, some education courses, childcare, certain medical aids, and exports.
You have to start charging GST/HST on the supply that made you exceed $30,000. You exceed the $30,000 threshold 1 over the previous four (or fewer) consecutive calendar quarters (but not in a single calendar quarter).
Businesses must register for GST if their turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh, ₹20 lakh, or ₹10 lakh, depending on the supply and state/UT, and for specific categories like e-commerce sellers. GST simplifies the tax structure by eliminating cascading taxes and consolidating multiple indirect taxes into one.
The GSTT exemption may be used for both outright transfers as well as transfers in trust. The allocation of the GSTT exemption is generally reported on a gift or estate tax return (IRS Form 709 or IRS Form 706), though this is not required by law.
But persons who are engaged exclusively in the business of supplying goods or services or both that are not liable to tax or wholly exempt from tax or an agriculturist, to the extent of supply of produce out of cultivation of land are not liable to register under GST.
The GST exemption essentially allows the earmarking of transfers, made during lifetime or at death, that either skip a generation or are made in trust for multiple generations.
To answer this, we follow the place-of-supply rules, which means that if the customer is located outside of Canada, no GST needs to be charged. If an American or international customer has a delivery location based in Canada, GST rules will apply based on the province of address.
GST exemption from registration
A person whose turnover falls below the threshold exemption limit—INR 40 lakhs for goods, INR 20 lakhs for services, and INR 20 lakhs (or INR 10 lakhs in special category states) for specified categories.

Businesses dealing in goods are exempt from GST if their annual aggregate turnover is below INR 40 lakhs. For businesses in hilly and northeastern states, this threshold is reduced to INR 20 lakhs to address regional challenges. Service providers are exempt from GST if their turnover is under INR 20 lakhs annually.
Small and medium-scale businesses can benefit from GST exemptions based on their aggregate turnover: If the aggregate turnover of a company or individual supplying goods is less than INR 40 lakhs (INR 20 lakhs in certain hilly and northeastern states), they can claim a GST exemption.
The total of lifetime gifts and the estate are eligible for a lifetime exemption, which is set at $13.99 million in 2025. The exemption amount is indexed for inflation, and was scheduled to be reduced by half after 2025. The higher exemption level was made permanent and slightly increased to $15 million in 2026 by P.L.
During the GST/HST break
From December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025, you should not have charged the GST/HST on the qualifying goods and services listed above. Keep your records and remit and report your regular GST/HST as usual.
