When you reach your PhonePe limit—typically ₹1 lakh per day or 20 transactions—further transactions will be declined, and you must wait 24 hours from the last transaction to resume payments. This restriction is set by the NPCI to curb fraud.
Once you hit the limit, either in amount or number of transactions, you must wait 24 hours before making more transfers.

You can transfer large amounts of money, but transactions over $10,000, especially in cash or structured deposits, trigger mandatory reporting (like IRS Form 8300 or Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) reports), not necessarily taxes, to fight money laundering. Banks file reports for cash over $10k (CTR) or suspicious activity (SAR) if they see patterns to avoid reporting (structuring), which can flag accounts even for smaller amounts like $200 if part of a pattern.
The UPI transaction limit is ₹1 lakh per day as per NPCI. For capital markets, insurance, collections, and foreign inward remittances, the limit is ₹2 lakh. Tax payments, educational institutions, hospitals, IPOs, and RBI retail direct schemes, the limit is ₹5 lakh.
Daily Limit on PhonePe Transactions

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 21 lakh on Walmart-owned digital payments firm. The penalty, announced through an order dated September 10, follows a statutory inspection of PhonePe's operations for the period between October 2023 and December 2024.

Note: The transaction limits for UPI are set and standardised by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that governing body for UPI. Since these limits are set by the government, users cannot increase or make changes to the UPI limit. Users must adhere to the daily transaction limit guidelines.
