If you made a mistake on a GST return, you can generally correct it by filing an amended return, a correction form (such as GST F7), or by adjusting the error in your next, subsequent, or future tax return. Errors can often be fixed for minor clerical mistakes, missed credits, or over-reporting liability.
If mistakes in GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B are not amended before filing the annual return, they cannot be corrected in GSTR-9. Instead, such discrepancies must be disclosed in Part V of the GSTR-9 form. No Direct Revisions: GST returns are not directly revisable; changes must be made through future returns.
The registered business/entity has to pay the correct GST and get a refund for the wrong GST paid. No penalty under GST Act for incorrect filing of GST returns but interest at the rate of 18% p.a. is chargeable on the tax amount shortfall. No penalty is applicable for delayed invoice payments.
You cannot revise a GSTR-3B form once it is filed. However, you can file corrections in a subsequent GSTR-3B by selecting the "Amendment" option and specifying the tax period you want to rectify.
Change a return you already filed
If you make a mistake on your tax return, you usually correct it by filing Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to adjust income, deductions, or credits, but the IRS often corrects simple math errors or missing forms automatically; if you owe more tax, you'll incur interest and penalties, so fixing errors promptly with an amendment can reduce costs, but you must file it within the specified time frame, usually three years from the original filing date.
Log in to the GST Portal with your valid credentials. Navigate to the "Returns Dashboard" section. Click on "Prepare Online" and select the relevant financial year and month for which you want to amend the return. Select "Amendment of Return" from the available options.

Steps for Correcting Errors in GSTR-1:
The IRS does not check every tax return. It does not check the majority of them, but the IRS implements methods that track certain factors that would result in a further examination or audit by them.
An offender not paying tax or making short-payments has to pay a penalty of 10% of the tax amount due, subject to a minimum of Rs. 10,000. Therefore, the penalty will be high at 100% of the tax amount when the offender has evaded i.e., where there is a deliberate fraud.
Share: Filing an amended return does not necessarily increase the risk of a tax audit. Because the IRS does not disclose the standards and criteria it uses when selecting tax returns for audits there is no reason to believe that there is an amended return audit policy.
If you need to make a change or adjustment on a return already filed, you can file an amended return. Use Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and follow the instructions.
(updated January 2, 2024) You can electronically file up to three amended returns per tax year. If you file a third amended return that is accepted, all subsequent attempts will be rejected.
If you made a mistake on a GST/HST return you already filed, you can correct it by submitting an adjustment through your CRA online account or by mailing a signed letter to your tax centre with the corrected amounts.
