IFRS 15: Revenue from Contracts with Customers replaced IAS 18: Revenue (along with IAS 11: Construction Contracts) for annual reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2018. It introduced a unified five-step model for revenue recognition, shifting from a risk-and-reward approach to a transfer-of-control model.

Effective date of IFRS 15. IFRS 15 Revenue from Contracts with Customers was issued by the IASB on 28 May 2014 and applies to an entity's first annual IFRS financial statements for a period beginning on or after 1 January 2018.
IFRS 18 requires entities to classify income and expenses into five categories, three of which are new – i.e. operating, investing and financing – and the income tax and discontinued operation categories. The new standard sets out detailed requirements for classifying income and expenses into each category.
The main objective of IFRS 16 is increasing transparency in the numbers presented in financial statements, and nearly all found shortcomings of the previous standard relate to financial statements not being transparent enough when prepared under IAS 17.

The effective date of IFRS 17, which will be replacing IFRS 4, is now 1 January 2023; the fixed expiry date for the temporary exemption in IFRS 4 from applying IFRS 9 has been deferred to 1 January 2023.

IFRS 15 'Revenues from Contracts with Customers' provides comprehensive guidance on accounting for revenue recognition. Nonetheless, there are some aspects of IFRS 15 that are complex and can pose practical challenges for reporting entities to apply and implement effectively.
IFRS 15 does not apply to wholly unperformed contracts where all parties have the enforceable right to end the contract without penalty. These contracts do not affect an entity's financial position until either party performs under the contract.
