In 2024, refunds tied to the additional child tax credit started going out Feb. 27. That means if you finish and submit your taxes prior to that date, you'll be waiting till then to get your complete return, not just the amount related to the credit.
In most cases, refunds are issued within 21 calendar days of when your taxes are submitted, but the tool can alert you of all the steps along the way, including when your return was received, when it was accepted and when the refund is actually sent.
By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for returns that properly claim the advanced child tax credit or the earned income tax credit.
Tax credit per child for 2024
The maximum tax credit per qualifying child is $2,000 for children under 17. For the refundable portion of the credit (or the additional child tax credit), you may receive up to $1,700 per qualifying child.
The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) increased the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for tax year 2021. Tax filers could claim a CTC of up to $3,600 per child under age 6 and up to $3,000 per child ages 6 to 17. There was no cap on the total credit amount that a filer with multiple children could claim.
The maximum credit amount is $500 for each dependent who meets certain conditions. This credit can be claimed for: Dependents of any age, including those who are age 18 or older. Dependents who have Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers.
When does the 2025 tax season start? U.S. taxpayers can file taxes starting Jan. 27. Even before the official start date, you can get started on your filing. Employers have until Jan. 31 to deliver tax documents to employees.
Starting in July, most families with children will get child tax credit payments in their bank account. People who receive payments by direct deposit will get their first payment by July 15 and payments will go out on the 15th of the month each month after that until the end of 2021.
However, if you receive a refund when you file your 2021 tax return, any remaining Child Tax Credit amounts included in your refund may be subject to offset for tax debts or other federal or state debts you owe.

The IRS typically processes tax refunds and executes direct deposit transactions within 21 days after accepting your tax return. It's common for the IRS to issue them on business days, from Monday through Friday.
