RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) is faster than ACH (Automated Clearing House), as it provides near-instantaneous, individual, and irrevocable transaction settlements. While ACH processes payments in batches, often taking 24–48 hours, RTGS is typically settled within minutes to 2 hours, making it ideal for high-value or urgent transfers.
Funds transferred through RTGS are deposited into beneficiary accounts within 30 minutes. RTGS enables high-value transactions with a minimum transaction limit of INR 2 Lakhs.
The difference between ACH and RTGS is that in the case of ACH, the settlement of payments is done in batches, while in the case of RTGS, real-time payment is handled individually. Sending money via the ACH is more cost-effective than RTGS, while the RTGS is the fastest way of transferring money.
According to the National Automated Clearing House Association (Nacha), which manages ACH payments, ACH limits can be as high as $1,000,000 per day, up from $100,000 previously. However, ACH transfer limits for your checking account or savings account may be considerably lower.
RTGS and ACH are both electronic fund transfer systems in Jamaica, but the main difference is that RTGS allows transfer of funds faster (credited within two hours), while ACH operates in batches and may take some time (up to 24 hours) for funds to be credited.
Overview: RTGS transfers require a minimum of ₹2 lakh with no RBI maximum cap. Banks set daily limits between ₹25-50 lakh for individuals. Available 24/7 with instant settlement, RTGS suits high-value property, business, and urgent payments with enhanced security features.
How to expedite ACH transfers
ACH is used for all kinds of fund transfer transactions, including direct deposit of paychecks and monthly debits for routine payments. While ACH transactions offer convenience, they also present certain risks, such as unauthorized transactions, fraud, and other security concerns.
RTGS processes transactions instantly. This makes it the faster option for high-value, time-sensitive transfers. On the other hand, NEFT operates in batches, with transactions processed in half-hourly intervals.
1) Payment Gateway transaction limit is up to 10 lakh per day / per transaction. 2) Own account fund transfer — No limit (up to the available balance in debit account). 3) IMPS to registered beneficiary - up to Rs 5 Lakh per day/per transaction. 4) NEFT to registered beneficiary per day - up to Rs.
Under normal circumstances, the beneficiary branches are expected to receive the funds in real time as soon as funds are transferred by the remitting bank. The beneficiary bank must credit the beneficiary's account within 30 minutes of receiving the funds transfer message.
Transaction Fees – NEFT has the lowest charges, IMPS charges nominal fees, while RTGS fees range from ₹25 to ₹50 based on the transfer amount. Inward transactions are free across all networks. GST on Fees – An 18% GST applies to transaction fees for all three payment methods, impacting the overall transfer cost.
If an RTGS transaction is not credited to the beneficiary account, does the remitter get back the money? Yes. If the beneficiary's bank is unable to credit the beneficiary's account for any reason, the former will return the money to the remitting bank within 2 hours.
Unlike batch-processing systems, RTGS processes and settles transactions immediately as they occur. This system is primarily used for high-value transactions and is managed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Wire transfers are generally faster than ACH. While ACH transactions may take 1-2 business days, wire transfers often occur on the same day.
Most US banks and other FIs (financial institutions) including credit unions allow ACH transfers.
It should be noted that because payments move in scheduled batches, the ACH payment processing time can vary. Standard transfers may take 2–3 business days, while same-day ACH and new instant ACH options are significantly faster.
1. Plan Ahead: If timing is critical, plan your ACH transfers well in advance to account for processing delays. 2. Use Same-Day ACH: Consider using Same-Day ACH services, which are available for certain transactions and can significantly reduce processing times.
ACH Refund Process
ACH Refund is available to anyone who has a federally assigned taxpayer identification number, Social Security number, or US Customs and Border Protection assigned number, and a U.S. bank account with U.S. bank routing number.
