In 2008, the NYSE acquired the American Stock Exchange, becoming the third largest U.S. options market. By 2013, ICE acquired the NYSE and remains the parent organization of the Exchange today.
Cede technically owns most of the publicly issued stock in the United States. Thus, most investors do not themselves hold direct property rights in stock, but rather have contractual rights that are part of a chain of contractual rights involving Cede.
The richest Americans own the vast majority of the US stock market, according to Fed data. The top 10% of Americans held 93% of all stocks, the highest level ever recorded. Meanwhile, the bottom 50% of Americans held just 1% of all stocks in the third quarter of 2023.
Once a company goes public and its shares start trading on a stock exchange, its share price is determined by supply and demand in the market. If there is a high demand for its shares, the price will increase. If the company's future growth potential looks dubious, sellers of the stock can drive down its price.
It is the largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization, exceeding $25 trillion in July 2024. The NYSE is owned by Intercontinental Exchange, an American holding company that it also lists (ticker symbol ICE).

No one sets a stock's price, exactly. Instead, the price is determined by supply and demand, like any other product or service.
The index is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, an entity majority-owned by S&P Global. Its components are selected by a committee.

Stock ownership by level of wealth
While more than half of U.S. adults own stock, most don't own much. The wealthiest 1% holds 50% of stocks, worth $23.3 trillion, as of the third quarter of 2024, according to the Federal Reserave.
While the U.S. government doesn't directly intervene in the stock market (say, by inflating the prices of stocks when they fall too low), it does have power to peripherally affect financial markets. Since the economy is a set of interrelated parts, governmental action can effect a change.

New York Stock Exchange
But it has remained the largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalisation ever since the end of World War I, when it overtook the London Stock Exchange.
Lynn Martin became the 68th president of the New York Stock Exchange in December 2021. She oversees not just the exchange but the entire NYSE Group. She is also the chair of Fixed Income and Data Services at Intercontinental Exchange, the entity that owns the NYSE.
This premarket window can affect the opening price of stock based on the demand and supply of that particular stock. In a nutshell, this causes the opening price to be different from the previous day's closing price. After market orders (AMOs) can also contribute to the difference between the closing and opening price.
Supply and Demand
In the stock market, supply is the number of shares people want to sell, and demand is the number of shares people want to purchase. If demand is high, buyers bid up the prices of the stocks to entice sellers to sell more.
