People choose Discover cards for strong cash-back rewards, especially the first-year unlimited match, plus benefits like no annual or foreign transaction fees, excellent U.S.-based customer service, built-in security (Freeze It, $0 Fraud Liability), and tools to build credit, making them great for everyday spending and building credit. They offer rotating 5% cash-back categories (like groceries, gas) and a simple flat-rate option, redeemable for cash or statement credits.
The main controversy surrounding Discover (Discover Financial Services) involves its widespread, 17-year practice (2007-2023) of misclassifying millions of consumer credit cards as commercial cards, leading to over $1 billion in inflated interchange fees for merchants, prompting major FDIC/Federal Reserve penalties, restitution orders, and a significant class-action settlement. Other issues include regulatory scrutiny over consumer compliance, a lawsuit by a former executive alleging discrimination, and ongoing debates about higher merchant fees in general.
Discover cards offer great perks like no annual/foreign fees, excellent customer service, and first-year cashback match, but they can have capped bonus categories, lower long-term rewards after year one, and less international acceptance than Visa/Mastercard, requiring you to activate bonus categories to maximize value.
Discover card benefits include robust rewards like 5% rotating categories or 1.5x miles, a unique first-year Cashback Match, no annual fees, $0 fraud liability, free FICO scores, and helpful tools like spending analysis, with different cards catering to various spending habits (cash back, gas/restaurants, miles).
It is better to get a Visa card than a Discover card in most cases because Visa cards are accepted by more merchants and offer more supplemental benefits. In addition, there are a lot more Visa cards to choose from, since Visa lets many banks and credit unions issue cards on its network.
American Express credit cards are the least accepted credit cards. Credit cards on the Amex network can be used in fewer places than Mastercard and Visa credit cards, which are accepted by merchants at more than 100 million locations and in 200+ countries and territories.

The 2/3/4 rule is a guideline, primarily used by Bank of America, that limits how many new credit cards you can get: no more than 2 in 30 days, 3 in 12 months, and 4 in 24 months, helping to prevent over-application and manage hard inquiries on your credit report. While not universal, it's a useful benchmark for responsible card application, though other banks have different rules (like Chase's 5/24 rule).
Discover was acquired by Capital One on May 18, 2025. As a result of the acquisition, all Discover Financial brands would be offered as the Capital One brands and services.
Some reasons credit card companies may decline transactions are that your purchase exceeds your credit limit, or the purchase is in a location where you don't normally shop. If the credit card issuer declines your transaction, it's a good idea to call the number on the back of your card and find out why.
Merchants Pay More
It may come as no surprise that the reason many merchants opt-out of accepting Discover cards (and American Express, for that matter) is about the bottom line. The Discover card is also like American Express in that they both charge a bit more to store owners to accept their cards.
