Apple payment methods are usually declined because the financial institution (bank) has rejected the charge, often due to insufficient funds, expired cards, incorrect billing information, or a security block. To resolve, verify your card details in Settings, ensure funds are available, or contact your bank to authorize the transaction.
When Apple Pay declines a payment, ensure the linked card is active and enabled for transactions. If the card was previously turned off, reactivate it in your bank's app or website. Update your payment information in Apple ID settings to refresh authorization.
On your Mac, use Apple Account Payment & Shipping settings to change the payment and shipping information associated with your Apple Account. To change these settings, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click your name at the top of the sidebar, then click Payment & Shipping.
Declined payments
There are a number of reasons the charge or verification might be declined: Apple is not allowed to accept credit or debit cards in your country. The card is not recognized in your country. Insufficient balance or account in arrears.
If you can't add a payment method
If the Add button is grayed out, you might be in a Family Sharing group and you use purchase sharing. Only the family organizer can have a payment method on file. If you want to use your own payment methods, turn off purchase sharing, then add your own payment method.
To fix the Netflix payment error, go to your Account settings on the Netflix website, update your card details (like zip code, CVV, expiry), contact your bank to ensure the card supports e-commerce/international payments, or try a different payment method like PayPal, as the issue often stems from insufficient funds, an expired card, or bank-side security blocks.
You might need to sign in to your Apple Account. Next to Payment Information, click Manage Payments. Click Edit. Click Remove Payment Method.
Check the default card in your account
Make sure the default card you're using for Apple Pay has sufficient funds and hasn't expired. If the card is the issue, you can switch to another card in your account. If you need to add a new card, check out our guide on how to add a credit card to Apple Pay.
Apple Pay restrictions, mainly on Apple Cash, are triggered by security issues like failed identity verification, suspected fraud, or having multiple accounts linked to one Social Security Number (SSN). Other causes include exceeding transaction limits, bank declines, device setting issues (like Screen Time), or simply needing to complete security checks, locking you from sending money or adding funds.
Why does Apple Pay decline a payment with funds available? Apple Pay uses your linked card, 1-(833)(414)(7612) and the bank may decline the transaction due to security rules 1-(833)(414)(7612), a hold, or a temporary restriction, even if there are funds.
Here are the five most common ones:
If you have questions about why your card is declined, contact your bank or card issuer. To use Apple Pay you need a supported card from a participating card issuer. To check if your card is compatible with Apple Pay, contact your card issuer.
If there's an issue, change your payment method
Tap your name. Tap Payment & Shipping. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple Account. Tap Add Payment Method, enter the new payment method, then tap Done.
You need a payment method for free iPhone apps for account verification, security, and to enable potential in-app purchases (IAPs) or subscriptions, as Apple's unified system requires a valid payment method on file to access the App Store and manage account status, even if nothing is charged for the free app itself. This ensures you're a real user and covers any future costs, like IAPs or pending charges from past transactions.
Note: If you can't add your card, it may not be supported by Apple Pay, or your issuer may need to approve it first. Contact your bank or card issuer, or see the Apple Support article If you can't add a card to Apple Wallet to use with Apple Pay.
If you're seeing this message while trying to subscribe: "Your payment method is not valid at this store. Please add a new payment method." This happens when your credit card's country does not match your Apple ID's region.
This can occur for a few different reasons: The 3-digit security code on the back of the Visa, MasterCard or Discover does not match what the card holder's bank has on file. For American Express this is the 4-digit code on the front of the card. The expiration date was entered incorrectly.
