Apple Pay ("Tap to Pay") usually fails due to incorrect NFC positioning, a thick protective case blocking the reader, a locked card, or temporary software glitches. Ensure your iPhone's top is within 0.5 inches of the terminal, restart your device, update iOS, and try removing/re-adding your card in the Wallet app.
This error occurs during setup on a new device if there is insufficient space to load Tap to Pay on iPhone. Insufficient space can be caused by having too many payment cards set up in Apple Wallet. Try removing one or more cards from Apple Wallet and then try to use Tap to Pay on iPhone again.
Important: If you can't tap and pay, check if you've completed the following steps: Check if your device supports NFC. Set Google Wallet as your default payment app. Add a card.
The touchscreen may not work properly if you wear gloves, have dust on your finger, or touch the screen with fingernails or a ballpoint pen. It may also not work if a conductive object, such as a coin or key, is close to the screen. If the screen is wet, the touch sensor may not work properly.
On Android, the simplest failure is that NFC is off. Check the toggle first, as turning NFC on often resolves the issue immediately. Approximately 30% of NFC issues are caused by the feature being turned off on Android devices. Make this toggle the mandatory first step in any field checklist.
If your phone's touch screen suddenly stops working, first clean the screen, remove the case/protector, then force restart (hold power + volume down for 10-15s) to fix software glitches; if it's still unresponsive, it's likely a hardware issue needing professional repair, potentially a broken screen or digitizer, or perhaps overheating.
Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Make sure that your fingers and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry. * For the Touch ID sensor, use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off any dirt or debris. Your finger should cover the Touch ID sensor completely, touching the surrounding metal ring.
Tap to Pay not working usually stems from phone settings (NFC off, locked screen), physical obstructions (thick case), expired/invalid card, merchant issues, or app glitches, requiring you to unlock your phone, remove/re-add cards, check NFC settings, update the app, or restart your device to resolve.
NFC no longer works on your phone
Although this is rare, we see it happen sometimes. It could be that the antenna is broken, which means you can no longer read the NFC tags. This is actually the worst-case scenario. You will have to buy a new phone to be able to read NFC tags again.
Restart your iPhone or iPad. Make sure your screen is clean and free of any debris or water. Disconnect any Lightning or USB-C accessories. If your screen works after removing an accessory, try using a different socket, cable or charger.
You can put a heart on your iPhone by reacting to messages (tap and hold a message), adding a heart emoji to the keyboard, or creating a custom Focus Mode to display a heart icon on your status bar (iOS 15+). The status bar heart is a customized Focus icon that appears next to the clock when activated.
To turn a touchscreen back on, the method depends on the device, but for Windows, use Device Manager (search or Win+X) to find "HID-compliant touchscreen" under Human Interface Devices and Enable it; for Chromebooks, try Settings > Device > Touchpad or a shortcut like Search+X, or restart the device; for phones, a force restart (like volume buttons + power button sequence) often fixes temporary glitches.
Restart your phone
If your phone is frozen with the screen on, hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to restart.
Make sure that NFC is turned on: Go to the "Settings" app and tap on "Wallet & Apple Pay" to check that NFC scanning is enabled. Check that your iPhone is within range: NFC only works over short distances, so ensure your iPhone is close enough to the other device or NFC tag you're trying to interact with.
