Buying a car for personal or business use may have tax-deductible benefits. The IRS allows taxpayers to deduct either local and state sales taxes or local and state income taxes, but not both. If you use your vehicle for business, charity, medical or moving expenses, you could deduct the costs of operating it.
There is a general sales tax deduction available if you itemize your deductions. You will have to choose between taking a deduction for sales tax or for your state and local income tax. You can deduct sales tax on a vehicle purchase, but only the state and local sales tax.
The maximum first-year depreciation write-off is $10,200, plus up to an additional $8,000 in bonus depreciation. For SUVs with loaded vehicle weights over 6,000 pounds, but no more than 14,000 pounds, 100% of the cost can be expensed using bonus depreciation.
You can get a tax benefit from buying a new or "new to you" car or truck for your business by taking a section 179 deduction. This special deduction allows you to deduct a big part of the entire cost of the vehicle in the first year you use it if you are using it primarily for business purposes.
The 6,000-pound vehicle tax deduction is a rule under the federal tax code that allows people to deduct up to $25,000 of a vehicle's purchasing price on their tax return. For new or used passenger automobiles eligible for bonus depreciation in 2021, the first-year limitation is increased by an additional $8,000, to $18,200.
If you purchase the vehicle and choose to do the actual expense instead of mileage, you can write off the actual expenses, including gas, insurance, tires, repairs, etc., as well as depreciation. So, if you have a $50,000 car with 100% business use, $50,000 divided by five years is a $10,000 tax write-off every year.
If the damage is so severe and the cost of repair is more than the value of the vehicle, then the insurer will write the car off and claim repairing it to be uneconomical.
Specifically, auto dealerships are required to file Form 8300, Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or Business,with the IRS within 15 days of receiving more than $10,000 in a single cash transaction. Form 8300 also must be filed if the total for two or more related transactions exceeds $10,000.
Insurers also write off cars if their calculations show the repairs required are not financially viable – for example because they will cost more than 50% of the vehicle's value. In some circumstances, your car could therefore be written off after a minor accident.
If your car is written off, ownership is transferred to the insurance company. You would receive a cash payout equivalent to the value of the vehicle (the settlement figure) if it were sold in its pre-accident condition.
The insurer will pay you the amount that the car was worth at the time it was written off. You can use this towards the outstanding balance on your finance agreement.
If you bought a full-size SUV (over 6,000 pounds) or truck in the last three months of 2017, up to 100 percent of the car's purchase price can be written off on your 2017 tax return. Even if you only put down a deposit, you may be able to deduct up to the full purchase price, especially if you have a home office.
You can claim a current deduction under Section 179 up to the annual luxury car limits. Example: For a passenger car placed in service in 2021, the limit is $10,200. Then you are entitled to a deduction in succeeding years under cost recovery tables. You can claim a first-year bonus depreciation deduction.
Tax Write-Off of Car Purchase
If you buy a car that you intend to use for business, you can write off some of the purchase price with the federal Section 179 deduction. You usually write off business purchases through depreciation, but Section 179 allows you to deduct the entire amount upfront.

If the owner wishes to keep the vehicle - whether because it is only a Category N write-off and it can still be driven, or because they are able to repair the damage for less than the cost of a replacement - they can refuse the offer and keep the car.
The Bank Secrecy Act is officially called the Currency and Foreign Transactions Reporting Act, started in 1970. It states that banks must report any deposits (and withdrawals, for that matter) that they receive over $10,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
