The setting to turn it on would be under Account Services > Security & Privacy. The additional security includes the option to receive a code via either text, phone call, or email.
When clients want to pay for a product or a service using a credit card, they need to enter a unique PIN to verify their identity. Since the chip inside the card is the first factor of two-factor authentication (something you possess), the PIN is the second authentication element (something you know).
When you enter your American Express Card number for payment at a participating online merchant, an American Express SafeKey window will appear automatically. You will be prompted to enter your OTP which will be sent to your mobile phone and/or Email address that you have on file for that account.
Hackers can now bypass two-factor authentication with a new kind of phishing scam. Two-factor authentication, the added security step that requires people enter a code sent to their phone or email, has traditionally worked to keep usernames and passwords safe from phishing attacks.
If you didn't save your backup codes, and you've lost the phone that you use for 2FA – try calling your phone network to transfer your old number over to a new phone. You'll need a new SIM card for that, and it could take a day or two for it to activate.
American Express: The Verification Code is a four-digit number on the front of the card above the credit card number on either the right or the left side of your American Express credit card.
You can request another code by selecting your preferred verification option again. If you are unable to get a One-Time Verification code, please contact us via 'Chat with Us' on the American Express® App or with Chat on your Online Account, or alternatively, by calling the number on the back of your Card.
If you have an American Express® Card, you will find the four-digit credit card CVV on the front.
Companies now offering optional two-factor authentication including Bank of America, Google Gmail, Amazon Web Services and PayPal, but you have to ask for it. Your bank or e-commerce provider may also offer this option. To find out, visit the security section of your bank's website.

American Express SafeKey 2.0 is a security solution that leverages the global industry standard, EMV® 3-D Secure, to detect and reduce online fraud—providing an extra layer of security when consumers shop through web browsers or in-app.
Technically, SafeKey can be switched off by the Merchant. However, the intention of SafeKey is to reduce instances of Card-Not-Present fraud. As such, American Express does not recommend turning off SafeKey at any time in accordance with SafeKey Implementation Guidelines.
How long does it take for American Express to approve a credit card application? Many American Express credit card applications will be approved immediately. However, if your application status is pending it can take up to 60 days to get a decision.
Never give your PIN to anyone on the phone, the internet or in the post. The only numbers you should need to give out are the card number on the front of your card and any security code (this is usually a 3-digit code on the signature strip of your card).
This 3-digit code is your CVV number / Card Security Code. American Express® cardholders: Look for the 4-digit code printed on the front of your card just above and to the right of your main credit card number. This 4-digit code is your Card Identification Number (CID).

Just use your authentication key (open your authentication application (app for 2FA) on your phone/device and manually enter the sixteen-character authentication key or scan the QR code you saved when enabling 2FA) to reinstall the 2FA codes in your authentication application and regain access to your account.
