According to Christian and religious perspectives, God hears all prayers but does not grant every request with a "yes." Instead, answers often come as "yes," "no," or "wait" based on divine wisdom,23], God's will, and what is ultimately best for the individual. Prayers may go unanswered due to selfish motives, unconfessed sin, or misalignment with God’s plan.
God hears all your prayers (Psalm 139:4, 1 John 5:14–15, 1 Peter 3:12) and, in one sense, he answers all your prayers. But we do not always receive what we ask for. When we ask God for something, the response will be 'Yes' or 'No' or 'Wait'.
And when we do pray, our reasons for asking must not be selfish (James 4:2-3). Your actions in life toward others. Our actions also can hinder God's answer. If you are flagrantly disobedient to God, you may expect your prayers to be hindered (Psalm 66:18; Micah 3:4; 1 Peter 3:7; 1 John 3:21).
In First John 5:14, the Bible tells us that if we ask anything according to His will, God hears us. Then in the next verse, it continues: “And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:15).
Signs God is trying to tell you something often involve repeated messages through various channels (scripture, friends, media), a strong inner conviction or unease, coincidental events that feel significant, closed doors/new opportunities, or a clear call to action or change, all usually aligning with biblical principles and leading to conviction (not condemnation) or clarity.
Three Ways God Answers Prayer
A prayer request is a brief message asking others to pray with you about a specific situation. It could relate to health, family, work, gratitude, or any concern someone would like others to lift up in prayer. Prayer requests can be submitted in person, written down on cards, or sent digitally.
We can have confidence that He hears and answers prayers according to His will. We know this from other passages of Scripture. Jesus taught us to pray in the The Lord's Prayer, "Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Simply put, sometimes God doesn't answer our prayers because we are praying for the wrong things. And we may not be doing this out of malice, either, so much as out of ignorance. Perhaps we don't know enough of God's Word to know his will.
Hindrances to God's blessings often stem from our own actions and attitudes, primarily unbelief, unforgiveness, and unconfessed sin, creating barriers like doubt, self-sufficiency, bitterness, and disobedience that block spiritual progress and God's favor. Key obstacles include a lack of faith, a focus on self instead of God, holding onto grudges, pride, negative speech, and a failure to align our desires with God's will, which can be remedied by turning to humility, repentance, and reliance on the Spirit.
And the Lord has a way of using unanswered prayers to expose the evil of our hearts and show us that all we truly need is Him. Because of this, unanswered prayer can often be an unexpected blessing.
Our prayers might not be answered because of unconfessed sin. Proverbs 15:29 says, “The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.” There are times as followers of Christ, our prayers go unanswered because we're harboring unconfessed sin in our lives.
The truth is, God always answers prayer… it just might not be in the way we expected. In his sermon on Sunday, Pastor Brian taught about four possible answers when we pray: Yes, No, Wait, or Grow. Surprisingly, this is the easiest category to tackle.
Spend time in prayer and meditation, asking him for wisdom and understanding. Remember that God's ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and he may have a different plan or timing for your life. Trust God and remember that he knows what's best for you, even when you can't see it.
In fact, those who knew they were being prayed for had more complications, possibly due to stress or expectation. Meta-analyses and follow-up studies agree: there's no reliable evidence that prayer changes health outcomes in any measurable way. The claims just don't hold up under scientific scrutiny.
In Islam, the three main forbidden times for optional (nafl) prayer are at sunrise, when the sun is at its zenith (midday), and as the sun is setting, with slight variations for specific times like after Asr until sunset and after Fajr until sunrise. These prohibitions, known as awqat al-karahiyyah, aim to prevent resemblance to sun worship and ensure prayers are offered at their designated, proper times, with exceptions for specific obligatory prayers like Asr if missed.
3 PM is considered the "Holy Hour" or "Hour of Great Mercy" in Catholic tradition because it's believed to be the exact time Jesus Christ died on the cross, making it a powerful moment to pray for mercy and reflect on His Passion, as revealed to Saint Faustina. Devotees at this time meditate on Christ's sacrifice, asking for grace for themselves and the world, often by reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet or Stations of the Cross.
In our hearts we will feel the confirmation that He does hear us, a feeling of peace and calm. We can also feel that everything will be fine when we follow the Father's will. If we doubt that He hears us, we ought to seek guidance in the scriptures and then ask if those things we read are true.
Lord, have mercy is the most prayed prayer in the Bible. And get this: there is not one time in the Bible where God denies this request!
There's no single #1 worst sin; it depends on the religious or moral framework, but pride is often called the root of all evil (Christianity/Islam), while the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (unforgivable sin) is considered the gravest in the Bible. Other severe sins include child abuse (Catholicism) and sins that "cry to Heaven" (like shedding innocent blood or oppressing the poor).
Along with sources of anger for God that I anticipated like worshipping other gods and plotting evil, I also found that God gets angry about: Pride and thinking oneself is better than another person (Isaiah 13:11-13)
