As a general rule of thumb, plan on 30 percent towards federal and 10 percent towards state. These numbers may be different based on your income and filing status. Credit card debt will not prevent you from receiving your tax refund, but it can affect how much of a refund you receive if you had a debt settlement.

Treasury Offset Program
Government agencies frequently garnish federal income tax refunds since they are the most common federal payments. The TOP is the only way your refund can be garnished; private creditors such as credit card companies don't have access to your tax refund.
Beginning with offers accepted on or after November 1, 2021, the IRS generally will not offset refunds to tax periods included on the offer after the offer acceptance date. For example, the taxpayer has an offer accepted on November 15, 2021. They file their 2021 tax return on April 15, 2022 showing a refund.
If you earn less than $10,000 per year, you don't have to file a tax return. However, you won't receive an Earned-Income Tax Credit refund unless you do file.
Tax audit triggers: You didn't report all of your income. You took the home office deduction. You reported several years of business losses. You had unusually large business expenses.
Who's getting audited? Most audits happen to high earners. People reporting adjusted gross income (or AGI) of $10 million or more accounted for 6.66% of audits in fiscal year 2018. Taxpayers reporting an AGI of between $5 million and $10 million accounted for 4.21% of audits that same year.

The Bank Secrecy Act is officially called the Currency and Foreign Transactions Reporting Act, started in 1970. It states that banks must report any deposits (and withdrawals, for that matter) that they receive over $10,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
