People do get upset when we announce that Gift of the Givers doesn't accept used clothes. However, this is not a new policy. It's a practice in place for years.

Clothes that should not be donated to a second hand store include ripped, stained, damaged or dirty items. You should not donate used items and clothes in poor condition because these items cannot be resold. Instead, damaged or dirty clothes should be recycled, upcycled or disposed of.

Goodwill does not prepare items before they sell them. They don't wash clothes, wipe off dirt or dust from items, or put in missing screws or parts that some items need. If you're going to donate any material goods, then you should clean and prepare them.

When you donate clothing instead, you're reducing your carbon footprint and doing your part to make the world a healthier place. You might not think you're making a huge difference, but if everyone donates clothes worthy of a second home, it could substantially reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills.
Dr Imtiaz Sooliman was born in Potchefstroom, in the North West. He started his schooling in Potchefstroom, but moved to Sastri College in Durban in 1978. He qualified as a medical doctor at the then University of Natal Medical School in 1984.
After receiving this message from his spiritual leader in Istanbul, Turkey, at the age of just 30, Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, immediately heeded the calling… and continues to do so to this day.
