GST/HST remittance frequency (monthly, quarterly, or annually) is determined by your annual taxable revenue, with deadlines usually one month after the reporting period ends. For most, it is quarterly, but businesses with over $6M in revenue must remit monthly, while those with under $1.5M may file annually.
If you have a quarterly reporting period, you have to file your GST/HST return and remit any amount owing no later than one month after the end of your reporting period. If your revenues are more than $6,000,000 you are required to report monthly.
Your GST reporting and payment cycle will be one of the following: Monthly – if your GST turnover is $20 million or more. Quarterly – if your GST turnover is less than $20 million – and we have not told you that you must report monthly. Annually – if you are voluntarily registered for GST.
GSTR-1: Filed quarterly, by the 13th of the month following the quarter. GSTR-3B: Filed quarterly, by the 22nd or 24th (depending on the state). Tax payment: Made monthly using Form PMT-06.
Payments mandate a GST portal challan; online modes are preferred for amounts over ₹10,000, with 1% cash payment required if monthly turnover exceeds ₹50 lakh for some cases. Late fees apply at ₹200/day (₹100 CGST + ₹100 SGST), and interest at 18% p.a. on delays.

Special rules for first time filers explains how to determine if you need to pay the GST/HST by instalments in your second fiscal year. If you are an annual filer and your net tax for your previous fiscal year is $3,000 or more, you may have to make quarterly instalment payments in the current fiscal year.
Both GST returns and payment are due one month after the end of the accounting period covered by the return. If you are on GIRO plan for GST payment, GIRO deductions are on the 15th day of the month after the payment due date. You may refer to your acknowledgement page for payment details after you have filed.
Barring few exceptions, all entities having GST registration are required to file GST annual return, irrespective of business activity or sales or profitability during the return filing period.
You do need a remittance voucher if you are paying in person or by mail. If you file your GST/HST return electronically, you can still remit your GST/HST at your financial institution. Use Form RC158, Remittance Voucher – Payment on Filing. Do not use the remittance part of your GST/HST return.
Annual reporting periods
You have to start charging GST/HST on the supply that made you exceed $30,000. You exceed the $30,000 threshold 1 over the previous four (or fewer) consecutive calendar quarters (but not in a single calendar quarter).
You face a penalty when you file your GST/HST return late if you owe money. The penalty equals 1% of your unpaid amount plus 0.25% of that amount for each full month your return is late. The maximum penalty period is 12 months. After that, no additional monthly charges apply.
Remit quarterly unless the CRA tells you, on your statement of account, that you have to remit at a different frequency. The monthly withholding amount (MWA) is the total of all required remittances in one calendar month.
Due dates: April-June quarter – 13th July. July-September quarter – 13th October. October-December quarter – 13th January.
GST instalments method (pay quarterly and report annually) You may elect this reporting method if you meet the eligibility requirements, including where you either: carry on a business with an aggregated turnover of less than $10 million.
If your business has an annual turnover of less than Rs. 20 lakhs (or Rs. 10 lakhs for businesses in certain states), you're not required to register for GST or pay GST every month. However, if your turnover exceeds this threshold, you'll need to register for GST and pay GST every month.
Login to the GST Portal with valid credentials.
To make your GST/HST instalment payments, use Form RC160, Remittance Voucher – Interim Payments. This form is only available in a personalized and printed format. You still have to make your payment by the due date even if you do not receive your remittance form on time.
The taxpayer will be required to pay interest on late payment of GST at a rate of 18% annually in addition to the late payment penalty. Further, the period of interest payment will be calculated starting on the filing deadline and ending on the day that the payment is actually paid.
