A financial year-end is the final day of a 12-month accounting period, commonly December 31, March 31, June 30, or September 30. Identify it by checking company registration documents (e.g., Companies House), reviewing tax returns, analyzing financial statements (Form 10-K), or looking at the last day of a specific quarter.
You pick your financial year-end when you register your company with CIPC. Most businesses choose 28 February (to line up with the SARS tax year), but you can choose any date that makes sense for your business operations.
Calendar year – 12 consecutive months beginning January 1 and ending December 31. Fiscal year – 12 consecutive months ending on the last day of any month except December. A 52-53-week tax year is a fiscal tax year that varies from 52 to 53 weeks but does not have to end on the last day of a month.
For most, the date will be one year after the last day of the month in which the company is registered. In your first year of trading, your reporting period will begin on the day of incorporation and run up to your designated ARD, so it will usually be slightly more than 12 months.
Both FY24 (no space) and FY 24 (with a space) are used for Fiscal Year 2024, with FY24 being common for saving space (charts, web) and FY 24 often used after spelling it out first or in formal contexts, though style guides vary, with some preferring the acronym as a block like FY24 or even FY2024, but generally, the year the fiscal period ends is used, so it covers parts of 2023 and 2024.
As of January 2026, most entities are in Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26), having moved from FY25 (July 2024-June 2025 or Oct 2024-Sept 2025) into the new fiscal year, with the US Federal Government's FY25 ending September 30, 2025, and their FY26 starting October 1, 2025.

To convert a date to its financial year end date you can use the following formula, assuming the date is in cell A1. The (MONTH(A1)>6) part returns TRUE when the month number of the date is above 6. In Excel TRUE = 1, hence 1 is added to the year of the date.
In its first year your company's financial year runs from the date on which the company was incorporated, until the end of the same month the following year – what's known as the Accounting Reference Date or 'Year End'.

To find quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3) in Excel, use the QUARTILE.INC() (inclusive) or QUARTILE.EXC() (exclusive) functions, like =QUARTILE.INC(data_range, 1) for Q1, =QUARTILE.INC(data_range, 2) for Q2 (median), and =QUARTILE.INC(data_range, 3) for Q3, replacing data_range with your cells (e.g., A1:A20) and the last number with 1, 2, or 3, respectively. Q4 isn't a standard quartile but would be the maximum value (use MAX() or QUARTILE.INC(range, 4) for the largest data point).
The traditional calendar quarters that make up the year are:
Dates for Q1: January 1 – March 31. Dates for Q2: April 1 – June 3. Dates for Q3: July 1 – September 30. Dates for Q4: October 1 – December 31.
