{!}PERC (Perchloroethylene) smells like a sharp, sweet, ether-like or chloroform-like chemical, commonly noticed as the scent of freshly dry-cleaned clothes, but its odor isn't a reliable warning sign for high, unsafe exposure because people quickly get used to it.
PERC is a commonly used name and will be used in the rest of the fact sheet. PERC is a nonflammable, colorless liquid at room temperature. It readily evaporates into air and has an ether-like odor.
To speed up the process and get the dry cleaning smell out of your clothes, allow your garments to air out in a warm spot for a few days. The heat from the sun will cause the perc to evaporate and the smell will dissipate. In a pinch, baking soda is an effective odor absorber that you may already own at home.
Health Hazard Summary: The most common effects of overexposure to perchloroethylene are irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, or skin, and effects on the nervous system similar to the effects of alcohol. Perc causes cancer in laboratory animals at exposure levels close to the level legally allowed in the workplace.
Perchloroethylene is a man-made chemical that can be a liquid or a gas. At room temperature, perchloroethylene is a colorless liquid. As a vapor, this chemical has a sharp, sweet scent.
At the time dry cleaning operations were found to be a major source of Perc exposure to the public. CARB subsequently approved regulations to reduce Perc emissions from dry cleaning operations. Due to these regulations Perc will no longer be used in dry cleaning operations by January 1, 2023.
Phosphorus Oxygen Compounds
Phosphorus(III) oxide is a white crystalline solid with a garlic-like odor. Its vapor is very poisonous.

California banned the installation of new Perc dry cleaning machines in 2007 and required that old machines be shut down by 2010. The law also stated that all Perc machines must be taken out of service by 2023. In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved California's Perc ban.
Living near a dry cleaning facility using PERC has been demonstrated to increase the risk of PERC exposure throughout the building where the dry cleaning is conducted, and in nearby buildings.
The strongest odor eliminators often involve industrial-grade ozone generators for severe issues, chemical neutralizers like NeutrOlene or PuroClenz Ultra (chlorine dioxide), and specialized enzyme cleaners for organic smells, with options like Ozone machines, activated charcoal, or vinegar/baking soda for DIY solutions, but for general strong odors, ozone generators or chlorine dioxide generators are top contenders, while Zero Odor and NeutrOlene are powerful commercial sprays, and activated charcoal offers passive absorption.
Certain medical conditions, including kidney or liver disease, can lead the body to release waste products through sweat, producing a vinegar-like odor. Dehydration can further intensify these smells by concentrating the chemicals present in sweat.
Disadvantages of PERC solar panels
PERC solar panels are slightly more sensitive to shading than traditional solar panels. PERC solar panels are a relatively new technology, there may be some uncertainty about their long-term durability and performance.
Hydrogen Peroxide is a colorless, odorless liquid. Because pure Hydrogen Peroxide is unstable and an explosion risk, it is usually in a water solution. It is a common oxidizing and bleaching agent and is used in deodorants, water and sewage treatment, and rocket fuels, as a disinfectant, and in making other chemicals.
Percocet is a prescription opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain, combining oxycodone (an opioid) and acetaminophen (like Tylenol). It works by altering the brain's pain perception and is used for short-term relief of acute pain or breakthrough pain in chronic conditions, but carries a high risk of dependence, addiction, and abuse due to its opioid component, making it a Schedule II controlled substance.
Botulinum toxin, a poison produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, is the most toxic naturally occurring substance on Earth, blocking nerve signals to muscles to cause death by paralysis.
PERC is a chemical solvent used by dry cleaners, fabric finishers, and in metal manufacturing. It is used in water repellents, silicone lubricants, spot removers, wood cleaners, and glue.

White phosphorus (see images) contains four phosphorus atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement. It has an unpleasant, garliclike odor and is extremely toxic (see hazard information table). It is unstable in air—first forming white fumes before bursting into flames.
Most people with high phosphorus do not have any symptoms. If symptoms are present, they may include: Bone and/or joint pain. Pruritus (itchy skin)
Chronic industrial inhalation exposure to white phosphorus fumes has resulted in various symptoms. Examples include general disability, inflammation of the large airways (bronchitis), anemia, physical wasting and malnutrition (cachexia), and destruction of the jaw bones, called “phossy jaw” or “Lucifer's jaw.”
