Quran 18:11 (Surah Al-Kahf) describes how Allah caused the "People of the Cave" to fall into a deep, long-term sleep to protect them. The verse states: "So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years", often interpreted as placing a protective, heavy seal on their hearing to ensure they remained undisturbed for 309 years.

So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years. Therefore We covered up their (sense of) hearing (causing them, to go in deep sleep) in the Cave for a number of years. Then We sealed up their hearing in the Cave for a number of years.
