The commonest complications are infection or a haematoma (a collection of blood) within the scrotum. A haematoma will usually cause a swelling and deep purple discoloration but the risk of this is minimised by you wearing your scrotal support after your operation.
Recovery after testicular or epididymal sperm retrieval depends on the method used. Recovery time can range from a few days to a week. Most men will be told to avoid strenuous activity. You might use a jockstrap until you've fully recovered.
Care You Should Perform at Home
This will prevent swelling and decrease pain • Wear snug underwear or athletic supporter for a at least one week • Shower daily starting 48 hours after surgery then dry the area completely • No hard/strenuous physical activity until your post-operative check 2 weeks after surgery.
Success rates look promising – so far.
One clinic we spoke to said that men with obstructive azoospermia have a very high chance of recovering sperm via SSR (over 90%). For men with non-obstructive azoospermia, another clinic said the chances of recovering sperm is approximately 40%.
Your Options for Sperm Retrieval Methods
These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. There is very little pain and discomfort associated with sperm aspiration, and recovery time is typically easy and straightforward.
Donor sperm and success rates
Donor sperm has a higher success rate with IVF compared to a couple with male factor infertility. However, because the sperm has been checked, the success rates are similar to healthy non-donor sperm samples. Women under 35 have a 33% or higher pregnancy success rate with IVF.
In 175 patients (88.4%) (of 254 patients (60.6%) who underwent unilateral TESE), sperm could be extracted from their testicles successfully. Bilateral testis biopsy was done in 165 patients (39.4%) but only in 37 men (22.4%), sperm was found in their testicles and 128 (77.6%) patients had no sperm at all.
On average, it takes around 74 days to produce new sperm from start to finish. Although the average time is 74 days , the actual time frame for an individual to make sperm can vary. The body produces an average of around 20–300 million sperm cells per milliliter of semen.
A small number of men experience a drop in their testosterone following surgical sperm retrieval, which may cause problems with sexual function, sleep, muscle weakness and anxiety. If you have any side effects at all, you should contact your clinic straight away.
Cost of a Sperm Extraction
For reference, in my practice the total cost for a sperm extraction procedure is generally around $3,000 ($1,000 for the procedure, $1,000 for the facility fee and anesthesia, and $1,000-1,500 for the fertility lab fee to process, freeze, and store the sperm).
A few of the common normal values are listed below. The normal volume varies from 1.5 to 5.0 milliliter per ejaculation. The sperm count varies from 20 to 150 million sperm per milliliter. At least 60% of the sperm should have a normal shape and show normal forward movement (motility).
How long a low sperm count lasts depends on the cause. You may be able to reverse the condition if the cause is something you can stop, like taking certain medications or keeping your testicles too warm.
Typically, you can return to work 24–48 hours after treatment, but strenuous activity should be avoided for 5–10 days. We'll prescribe you pain medication to help ease you through your recovery, and you may be given antibiotics to take before or after the procedure to help lower the risk of infection.
After two days you can resume normal activity. You may feel some after-effects of the procedure. This can include a small amount of bloody discharge, mild cramping or bloating, and constipation. If pain continues, contact your doctor.
You can resume your normal activity 3 days after your procedure. If you develop new pain, or your pain gets worse, as you do more activities, limit your activity until your pain gets better. Do not drive while you're taking pain medication.
Fecundability, the chance of getting pregnant per cycle of exposure, was 18.9% with fresh semen. In 1200 cycles cryopreserved semen was used and 60 pregnancies occurred, for a fecundability of 5.0%. Therefore, in our clinic, fresh semen is more than three times as likely to induce pregnancy as frozen semen.
There isn't a set amount for how often you should ejaculate. Research shows ejaculation has many health benefits such as reducing a person's risk for prostate cancer. But there isn't evidence that shows not ejaculating causes health problems.
The success rate of sperm retrieval varies among studies. The success rate of conventional testicular sperm extraction (TESE) is 16.7–49%, whereas the success rate of microdissection testicular sperm extraction (mTESE), the gold standard for sperm retrieval in non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is 41–63%.
Can your wife or partner help with a sperm sample? Yes, your spouse or partner can help you produce a semen sample. However, you should avoid unprotected sexual intercourse or using lubricants. Saliva (spit), vaginal lubrication and manufactured personal lubricants may affect your sperm.
Biopsy may be able to find the cause of the problem. In some cases, the sperm development appears normal in the testicle, but semen analysis shows no sperm or reduced sperm. This may indicate a blockage of the tube through which the sperm travel from the testes to the urethra.

What determines sperm health? Sperm health depends on various factors, including quantity, movement and structure: Quantity. Fertility is most likely if the semen discharged in a single ejaculation (ejaculate) contains at least 15 million sperm per milliliter.
A child belongs to the father when it is born through legal and normal ways ( marriage ). Pregnancy through sperm donation is not considered to be included in such methods.
