A Sedex audit, commonly known as a SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit), is a globally recognized assessment that evaluates a business’s working conditions, environmental performance, and ethical business practices within its supply chain. It helps companies demonstrate compliance with international labor standards, ensure worker safety, and, via Sedex's platform, share this data with multiple customers to avoid redundant audits.
The Sedex Self Assessment Questionnaire contains 4 major pillars – Labour Standards, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics. All four pillars count on legal requirements, international standards and good practice.
It was developed by the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) to assess and monitor ethical and responsible business practices in global supply chains. SMETA audits evaluate various aspects of a company's operations, including labor, health and safety, environmental impact, and business ethics.
What does Sedex do? The Sedex Platform, tools and services enable businesses to easily manage supplier sustainability risks and improve social, environmental and ethical performance to meet their supply chain goals.
To clarify the Sedex position, we will continue to recommend that high risk suppliers (as identified through our risk tools) are audited yearly, medium risk every 2 years and low risk at a buyer's discretion.
How far back can the IRS go to audit my return? Generally, the IRS can include returns filed within the last three years in an audit. If we identify a substantial error, we may add additional years. We usually don't go back more than the last six years.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd party audits categorize audits by who performs them and their purpose: First-party (internal) audits are self-assessments for improvement; Second-party audits are by customers or partners on suppliers to check compliance; and Third-party audits are by independent, external bodies for certification (like ISO) or validation, offering the highest objectivity.
The 5 Cs of audit (Criteria, Condition, Cause, Consequence, Corrective Action) are a framework for structuring clear, actionable audit findings, explaining what should be (Criteria), what is found (Condition), why it happened (Cause), what the impact is (Consequence/Effect), and how to fix it (Corrective Action/Recommendation) to drive organizational improvement and compliance.
It helps you understand the standards of labour, health and safety, environmental performance, and ethics within your own operations or at a supplier site. Delivered by one of our approved auditor companies , you or your supplier is provided with a Corrective Action Plan to help improve performance in these areas.
The four common types of auditors are Internal Auditors (evaluate company operations for management), External Auditors (independent review of financial statements for outside parties), Government Auditors (ensure compliance with laws for public agencies like the IRS), and Forensic Auditors (investigate financial fraud for legal proceedings). These roles focus on different areas, from internal controls and risk management to financial reporting accuracy and fraud detection.
