Naturally occurring rhodium consists exclusively of the isotope 103 Rh 1 0 3 R h , which has a nuclear spin ( ๐ผ ๐ผ ) of 1/2. Due to this spin-1/2 value, 103 Rh 1 0 3 R h is NMR-active and commonly used in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies to investigate complexes, despite having low sensitivity.
Rhodium (Rh) has one NMR active nucleus, 103Rh with an extremely wide chemical shift range. The nucleus is spin ยฝ and gives very sharp signals but has very low sensitivity (fig. 1).
Gold-197 is the stable isotope of gold with relative atomic mass 196.966552, 100 atom percent natural abundance and nuclear spin 3/2.
Rhodium detectors are used in nuclear reactors to measure neutron flux. Rhodium is used to produce optically pure quartz and glass, in the production of liquid crystal screens, lasers and thermocouples. Rhodium is also an indispensable precious metal for the jewelry industry [1].
South Africa is the dominant producer, accounting for nearly 80% of global rhodium output. Russia and Canada account for the remaining 20% of global rhodium production, depicted in the graph shown.
Impact of Rhodium on human health
Most people do not come into contact with rhodium, which is highly toxic and carcinogenic. Rhodium compounds "stain" the skin very strongly. The body can absorb rhodium through inhalation. The health effects of exposure to rhodium have not been thoroughly investigated.
While theoretically possible, this method is highly inefficient, as it requires immense amounts of energy to achieve the necessary atomic transformations. The production of lab-grown gold through transmutation is, therefore, more of a scientific curiosity than a practical method.
In addition to the historical rhodium deposits in Oregon, California, and Montana, there are current locations of rhodium deposits scattered across the United States.
The Downside
While rhodium plating will increase the shine and durability of your jewelry, at the end of the day, it's still just that: plating. Although it will not tarnish, it does wear off over time and how quickly will depend on how much wear and tear the jewelry takes.
Rhodium is a hard metal and it is therefore not used in making a complete jewellery item out of it, and therefore it is only used for plating other metal jewellery. Another reason of not using rhodium in making jewellery is that although it is hard but it is brittle too, if it falls, it breaks.

Although the underlying metal may be magnetic, the rhodium plating itself is not magnetic. Thus, if you have a piece of jewelry that has been rhodium plated, it will not be magnetic.
