Yes, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) can become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). The CFP Board offers an "Accelerated Path" for CFA charterholders, allowing them to bypass most of the required financial planning coursework. Candidates must still complete a Capstone course, pass the CFP® exam, and meet experience/ethical requirements.
Are You a CFA®? If so, you can take advantage of the Accelerated Path to CFP® certification. You will be eligible to sit for the CFP® examination immediately after completing a Capstone course through a CFP Board Registered Program.
The CFA Exam is considered harder than the CFP Exam due to its rigorous curriculum and 3 levels with low pass rates. According to CFAI's historical data covering 10 years, the average pass rate was 43%.
Overall, the CFP is a good first step. It is quicker and easier than the CFA. But, the CFA is more versatile. You can accomplish what you're looking for with either certification or neither.
Becoming a CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) typically takes 18-24 months on average, but can range from under a year to several years, depending on your background and pace, involving required coursework (12-18 months), passing the comprehensive exam, and completing the experience requirement (6,000 hours standard or 4,000 apprenticeship). The CFA profession is not becoming outdated. Rather, it's adapting. Although technology, in the form of AI, can help increase efficiency, it can never replace the skills of ethics, experience, or strategy which the CFA charterholder holds.
To become a charter holder, it's necessary to pass three exams and is an equivalent of a master's degree. The CFA designation is reputed to be the most difficult certification to obtain, which works to the benefit of those who succeed.
Industry professionals worldwide recognize the CFA charter as the “gold standard” of all financial analyst designations. CFP® certification is a professional designation for financial planners. Also known as the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ mark, its governing body, CFP Board, administers the credential.
Accelerated Path Requirements Checklist
CFP Board limits candidates to five lifetime attempts at the CFP® exam and no more than three tries within any 24-month period. After a failed attempt, retakes must wait until the next scheduled testing window.
