In many cases when someone tries to send money to a closed bank account, the bank will simply return the funds to the sender or decline the transaction. It can take about five to 10 days for funds to be returned to the sender.
Reversal of Funds: If the recipient's account is closed, the funds are automatically reversed back to the sender's account. Depending on the banks involved, this process can take a few days. Temporary Holding: In some cases, the recipient's bank might hold the funds temporarily.
If someone sent you money after your account has been closed, the money will automatically be sent back to the sender. The time it takes for the sender to get their money back depends on the currency and how they sent it — for example, card or Swift refunds usually take longer than bank transfers.
How long does money take to bounce back from a closed account? The timing for getting money back after a payment is sent to a closed account can vary depending on the situation and involved financial institutions. However, it may potentially take up to several weeks for a misdirected transaction to get refunded.
If an ACH payment is cleared into the receiver's account, it may not be reversed. However, with evidence and an investigation, the bank may return the money via a separate transaction if fraud or other valid reason is discovered.
What if my tax refund is sent to a closed bank account? If you realize too late that you have specified a closed bank account on your tax return, the IRS will attempt to process the direct deposit to that account. Your financial institution may reject the direct deposit, sending the funds back to the IRS.
Generally, your funds remain safe even if your account becomes dormant. However, there may be restrictions on accessing the account until it is reactivated. It's crucial to contact your bank to understand their policies regarding dormant accounts.
If the receiving bank rejects the wire transfer, the funds will ultimately be returned to the original account. Typically, you can expect a rejected wire to be returned within 2 business days of the original transaction.
Speak to your bank
The first thing to do is get in touch with your bank to tell them what's happened. Make sure you have all your details handy (including details of the transaction). Your bank should act within 2 working days. They should contact the bank that's received the money and ask for the money to be returned.
First, the reversal must be sent to the bank within 24 hours of noticing the error and no later than 5 banking days after settlement. Then the payment originator must also reach out to the payment recipient to inform them a reversal is in progress.

Rules vary by bank, but you may be able to cancel an ACH transfer over the phone, or you may need to fill out a stop payment form online or at a branch. Either way, time is of the essence. If the payment has already cleared, you'll need to request a reversal, which is a more complicated process.
Often, if a financial institution receives a request for transfer and doesn't have an account with a matching account number, or the account has been closed, the transfer will be declined. No money will be exchanged. The funds will remain with the sender.

Sending a payment to the wrong account
If your money went to an invalid account, it will usually bounce back into your account. Retrieving a mistaken payment to a valid account can be more difficult. As a general rule, banks can reverse a payment made in error only with the consent of the person who received it.
If your bank account or credit card has closed since obtaining a refund, please allow up to 60 working days for the funds to land. If you have used a switching service then some banks will automatically transfer any payments already on their way to your new account.
Sometimes, banks close an account without warning, meaning your funds are frozen and you can't make transactions or withdrawals. If there's money in the account, your bank must return it to you. That said, if they closed it due to concerns about illegal activity, they may hold the funds until further investigation.
If you made a mistake with your routing or account number, the bank may catch the problem and reject the transaction. But in some cases the bank may miss it, and the money can be deposited into the wrong account. If that happens, contact your financial institution to try to fix the problem.
